Once Upon a time in… Hollywood Review

Once Upon a time in Hollywood is the 9th film from director Quentin Tarantino and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. The movie takes place in the 1969 and centers around Actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) who gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western, but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn’t recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth (Pitt), his easygoing best friend and longtime stunt double. In this review I will be talking about major spoilers so you have been warned

The Good

This movie was a very fun movie in most parts, I particularly liked the relationship between Rick and Cliff and there hilarious banter between each other. I also liked how it made you feel like you were looking back through history and watching the production of a 60s westerns. I also loved to comedy but wish there was much more of it, like a scene at the beginning of the film where Rick is explaining that he can’t drive himself because is car is being worked on, the Cliff stops the scene to tell the audience that “That’s a lie and the real reason is he got his license taken for to many DWIs”. I thought that bit was hilarious and wished they did more of that, but sadly it only happened that one time. Also one of my favorite parts of the movie comes at the very end (This is your spoiler warning, If you haven’t seen the film yet skip down to the bad). The scene in particular is when the hippies come to kill Rick and Cliff, which was great because Rick was drunk in his pool and Cliff is high on acid but still manages to stop the killers with the use of his very well trained dog. I wish that there was more of this in the movie because it was hilarious and very well done.

The Bad

I touched upon this a little bit in the good but, there were a lot of comedy elements I really liked in this but they were not fully utilized which was a real shame. Also I feel like Margot Robbie character is very pointless, even if she was used to add historical context it still didn’t make her character any more of a pointless distraction from the film. Also this movie is way to long with mainy boring parts that make this feel like it goes on forever. I feel if they focused mainly on Rick and Cliff it would have made for a much better movie.

Overall

This movie can be a very fun movie if you are a fan of film or if you grew up in the 60s and have that nostalgia for that type of cinema. Other than that I do recommend you check this one out regardless of the long runtime just to see the spectacular ending.

Knives Out In-Depth Review (Spoilers)

Knives Out is a Modern Day Whodunnit Directed by Rian Johnson. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate Harlan’s dysfunctional family and devoted staff, Blanc is determined to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. Before I continue, this review will be talking about key plot spoilers and ultimately giving away the mystery, you have been warned!

The Good

I really enjoyed this movie, the story was very well played out, the acting was very well handled. My favorite thing about this movie was that it was a typical mystery movie, it actually is two different movies, a mystery and a crime drama. This is because about half way through the movie, it was revealed the the victims caretaker when giving him is nightly medication she accidentally gives him an overdose of morphine which worries him and tells her to do this extreme plan to escape and he kills himself by slitting his throat. But before he died he told her exactly what to say to the detective because she has a condition where when she lies it causes her to vomit. The detective believes her lie and she gets away with it, the movie then follows Marta as she is hiding from the family and detective so she doesn’t get caught, when she runs into Chris Evans character, Ransom Drysdale, which is who I originally thought was gonna be the killer, because throughout the movie and trailers he was shown to be a jerk character, plus he didn’t go to his grandfathers funeral, but was early for the will reading. Anyway, he meets up with Marta and she tells him everything which leads him to try and help her which ultimately gets her seemingly caught by the detective. But it is then that she tells the detective the truth, which is when he puts the pieces together and reveals that Marta is not the real killer and it is actually Ransom because he switched the drugs she was supposed to give him in hopes she would give him the real medicine, but she actually gives him the right medicine but scares him into thinking he would die, which drove him to kill himself. This twist was handled so well and made the movie much more enjoyable because usually you are trying to find out who the killer the entire movie, but with this you think you know who the killer is, so you can enjoy the story.

The Bad

This movie has a ton of big name people in it, Like Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Katherine Langford, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, and many more. Some of these people have been in other very great films and shows but I feel in this movie they are not given a lot to do. The main two people you follow throughout is Ana de Armas (Marta Cabrera) and Daniel Craig (Detective Blanc). Other than that these other remarkable actors are really just side characters and they are all extremely self centered and unlikable, which makes the ending much more satisfying.

Overall

This is a very fun and rewatchable murder mystery that keeps you attention, and aside for most the character being miserable jerks, the movie still is very enjoyable and worth checking out.

Call Of the Wild In-depth Review

Call of the Wild is the newest movie from 20th Century Fox (now called 20th Century Studios) based on the legendary book by Jack London. This movie follows Buck, a dog who after getting taken from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon in the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail-delivery dog sled team, Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime as he ultimately finds his true place in the world.

The Good

What I liked was that the movie didn’t feel like another dog movie you have seen a thousand times and really just told a fun story about finding yourself and adapting to situations while using the dog as a vessel of travel. The locations in this film are all shot in beautiful wilderness locations from vast grassy mountains to icy frozen lakes, if you are looking for a movie with a pretty scenery, this movie has it.

Another thing I enjoyed is it had many different side stories like working with a team of sled dogs on a mail route to hiking and canoeing along the Yukon to find where nobody has been before. It helps to get you to the end of the movie without getting bored and I really appreciated that.

The Bad

My flaws with the movie are that the human characters are kind of pushed to the side in favor of our CGI protagonist which is a real shame due to the fact that they brought Harrison Ford into this and really didn’t utilize him as much as the trailers hinted at, as in the trailers they strongly followed Ford’s character where as in the actual movie he become a main character in the last 30 minutes of the hour and a half film. Another flaw is the villain is just plain awful. He is extremely unlikable even for an antagonist and his motives are not really justified where with some villains you can relate to them in some way, this one just plain sucks.

Overall

Even though the human characters are very underutilized, this movie still has a fun story and a ton of heart that makes for an enjoyable time.
